WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke by telephone on Wednesday (Aug 16) with American citizen Paul Whelan, who’s being held in a Russian jail, in line with a supply aware of the decision.
Blinken informed Whelan to “hold the religion and we’re doing every part we are able to to deliver you residence as quickly as potential”, CNN reported, citing a supply.
Whelan, a former US Marine, was arrested in 2018, held for 18 months in Lefortovo jail in Moscow and jailed for 16 years in 2020 on spying costs. He has denied the accusations.
The US has designated Whelan as “wrongfully detained”, a time period that successfully says the fees are bogus and the case is politically pushed.
US ambassador to Russia, Lynne Tracy, visited Whelan in Might within the jail in japanese Russia the place he was being held.
